Why this blog?

I am writing this blog related to my studies, which will give me a professional certificate in vocational pedagogy (Ammattiopettajan pedagoginen pätevyys). The programme takes place in Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences from 22nd May 2017 to approximately end of March 2018. The full length is one year, but I participate a group with the aim to complete the studies on a fast track.

In teaching one of the most often used methods is nowadays to ask the students to keep a learning diary. This blog is about learning and development, therefore I like to rather call it a development diary. I want to track and make visible my development as a professional, as I have already extensive background in business studies (having completed a MSc in Economics and Business administration) and international work experience in the field of marketing for over 10 years. The last two years I have already worked as a lecturer at a Finnish UAS, so I have some training experience under the belt.

During my studies I will reflect in this blog different events, meetings, training sessions and development projects that I have participated, planned or executed. I might also comment on literature or articles that I have read related to learning techniques, organizational development, international business, educational policies and laws concerning these issues mainly in Finland, but also internationally.

The ability to reflect on one’s own skills, attitudes and abilities to underpin professional practice and professional development is very important in adult education. Therefore I am going to ponder e.g. the following questions related to my upcoming experiences:

  • What did I expect?
  • What did I learn?
  • What felt easy, what felt difficult?
  • How can I apply this experience or knowledge in my work?
  • Where do I notice the change? What do I do differently than before?
My own starting point is, due to my practical background, very much business oriented. My aim in this certification is not only to develop pedagogic skill that are applicable in a classroom, but rather learn skills that are useful in other private (or public) sector organizations as well. Coaching, employees' learning in an organization, knowledge development and innovation skills are all vital in the current business arena, no matter what sector you are in. I enjoy my current position as a lecturer, but I could also see myself as a team lead, development manager, education manager etc. in an organization eager to invest in the skills development of its employees.

As you will notice, I will blog both in Finnish and English, as they are two "natural" languages for me to communicate in.

Learning and professional development have always been the main motivators for me in my career. I have set goals and worked to achieve them. Now I welcome you to join me in this path to pedagogic certification - let's learn, let's brain it and nail it!

Mikä käyttöteoria minua ohjaa? Osa 1/2

Pedagogisessa ajattelussa oleellista on henkilökohtainen uskomusjärjestelmä, ns. käyttöteoria.

Games in teaching: testing out Seppo.io

It is summer time and a therefore a good time to start thinking about how to organize the courses in the coming autumn semester. One of the goals that I have set for myself in my teacher training is to learn more about pedagogy in the digital environments, and also touch the topic of gaming that is oh so hot in the Finnish education industry at the moment. The gaming function in education is not there just for fun (even if it is clear that enjoying the learning process improves the results), but in fact it has been proven e.g. at University of Colorado in Denver that  learners who gained skills through gamified e-learning courses scored 14% higher than those who learned through traditional methods.  Having heard that our university has an access to Seppo.io I am eager to test it out. Seppo.io provides a platform to teach with a game, "in a fun and easy way", as they advertise. The pros of the tool are the possibility to take the learning out from the classroom to the ...
